A Basic History of the United States, Vol. 5, The Welfare State, by Clarence Carson

The purpose of this class is to understand the events and ideas that produced a national government that went far beyond the bounds imagined by our Founding Fathers. To do this we will study the following administrations: Woodrow Wilson and his New Freedom; Theodore Roosevelt and his New Nationalism; Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal. More specifically, we will study the impacts of Fabian Socialism, pragmatism, the social gospel, evolution, and progressivism on Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Franklin Roosevelt, as well as the impact of the Great Depression in producing the welfare state. Finally, we will look at the conservative response to the immense growth of the national government and some biblical principles that enable us to better understand this era of American history. You may order these books on-line. Used copies of these books are found on-line at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Abebooks.com, Exodusbooks.com, and others.
