Plant & Animal Life Cycles - (Grades K-2) First Semester +

Properties, Length, Capacity, & Sound - (Grades K-2) Second Semester +

Teacher: Mrs. Kim VanderHill

Time:  Friday 9:00-9:55

Class & Material Cost:  $215

Book:  None

1st Semester:  God's creation is brimming with marvelous living creatures and plants.  We will be raising fruit flies and pea plants in order to study, compare, and contrast their respective life cycles.  We will experiment with germination, decaying matter, and environmental controls.  Data collection and organization will be emphasized.

2nd Semester:  Color, shape, size, weight, and texture are among the properties investigated as students develop observing, classifying, and sorting skills using familiar objects.  We will practice measuring in various ways so students will recognize the importance of standard measuring tools and units.  For the last few weeks we will explore the nature of vibration, sound waves, and pitch with a final instrument-making activity.

Electrical Circuits & Magnets - (Grades 3-5) First Semester +

Lenses, Mirrors, Color, & Light - (Grades 3-5) Second Semester +

Teacher:  Mrs. Kim VanderHill

Time:  Friday 10:00-10:55

Class & Material Cost:  $215

Book:  None

First Semester:  Using a variety of circuit elements, students will design, construct, and diagram simple electrical circuits.  They will investigate resistance in solid and liquid conductors, and even make their own light bulbs and circuit fuses!  They will also see how magnetic fields can produce electricity, or be used to determine direction.

Second Semester:  We will learn about refraction and reflection as we experiment with light, mirrors, lenses, and filters.  Then the students will explore prisms, color filters, and pigments in order to determine the components of white light and the products of color mixing.

Electrical Connections & Electromagnetism - (Grades 6-8) First Semester +

Powders, Crystals, and Chemical Interactions - (Grades 6-8) Second Semester +

Teacher:  Mrs. Kim VanderHill

Time:  Friday 11:00-11:55

Class & Material Cost:  $215

Book:  None

First Semester:  Students will build, operate, and analyze different electrical circuits and experiment with the variables that affect the current in each by building their own galvanometers.  They also will look at simple energy converters and use circuits to model some common household devices.  Students will also explore the unique relationship between electricity and magnetism, and how it can be manipulated to produce an electric current or a magnetic field.  They will construct several devices based on their findings.

Second Semester:  Students will observe and identify the characteristics of various powders and crystals.  Then, based on data obtained from a series of indicator tests, they will attempt to identify the components of unknown mixtures of the substances.  Then we will investigate atomic and molecular structure as a basis for a further study of the principles of chemistry, including pH, ionic and covalent bonding, isomerism, and balanced chemical equations.

The + sign means that this particular course is a supplemental course to enhance your child's education. The = sign signifies a complete course.
