Amazing Air & Weather Watching - (Grades K-2) First Semester +

Plant, Animal, and Insect Populations - (Grades K-2) Second Semester +

Teacher:  Mrs. Kim VanderHill
Time:  Friday 9:00-9:55
Class & Material Cost:  $225
Book:  None

1st Semester:  We will be working with balloons, parachutes, and paper airplanes as we explore properties of air and how air affects flight.  We will discover that air has weight and exerts pressure.  We will also explore techniques for observing and recording data about weather conditions and patterns.

2nd Semester:  Students will experiment with ants, ladybugs, daphnia, aphids, and fruit flies to find out what environmental factors affect their populations.  We will be growing plants so that feeding relationships can be explored.  The class members will also raise Painted Lady butterflies and wax moths to observe the metamorphosis these organisms undergo during their life cycles.  We will also study the structure and behavior of these insects.

Fungi, Microscopes, & Small Things - (Grades 3-5) First Semester +

Insect Life - (Grades 3-5) Second Semester +

Teacher:  Mrs. Kim VanderHill

Time:  Friday 10:00-10:55 and 12:45-1:40

Class & Material Cost:  $225

Book:  None

First Semester:  Students will culture three organisms (mushrooms, yeast, and fuzz on old food) and determine the factors necessary for each to mature and reproduce.  We also will be using different lenses to explore the microscopic world around us.

Second Semester:  We will be observing the life cycle stages of three insects (crickets, mealworms, and butterflies) and will experiment to determine some of the environmental preferences of insects.  We will also observe ants, aphids, fruit flies, and ladybugs to learn the physical characteristics that distinguish insects from other organisms.

If Shipwrecks Could Talk & Weather Forecasting - (Grades 6-8) First Semester +

Newton's Toybox and Simple Machines - (Grades 6-8) Second Semester +

Teacher:  Mrs. Kim VanderHill

Time:  Friday 11:00-11:55

Class & Material Cost:  $225

Book:  None

First Semester Students will explore the variety of different science concepts related to shipwreck archaeology and marine science, including navigating with a compass and quadrant.  With an emphasis on how we determine our local weather forecast, we will construct devices to measure local weather and chart national and local events.

Second Semester Students will examine force, mass, velocity, gravity, and acceleration as they experiment with toys founded on these elementary principles of physics.  We also will explore friction, work, energy transfer, and mechanical advantage as we construct tractors, pulleys and levers, and experiment with inclined planes and wedges.

The + sign means that this particular course is a supplemental course to enhance your child's education. The = sign signifies a complete course.
