Overview: Biology is fascinating subject, but the thought of dissection can make even the most stalwart parent cringe! This class is designed to augment the student's own biology studies. There are many supplementary hands-on materials explored in addition to the dissection specimens. Students will be required to write short research papers about the various animal kinds we are studying.
First Semester: Basic Dissection - This semester will familiarize the student with the hands-on dissection process, as well as teach scientific classification and safe laboratory techniques. The class will dissect the earthworm, grasshopper, frog, turtle, and mink. We will additionally look at the anatomy of the snake and, if time allows, dissect a pigeon.
Second Semester: Seashore & Aquatic Dissection - During this semester we will build on skills and information we learned the first semester, focusing on seashore and aquatic fauna. We will be looking at hydra, ray, fiddler crab, and jellyfish, and dissecting the starfish, crayfish, clam, squid, perch, and dogfish shark.
