Music is a gift! While not all students are musically gifted, all students can and should be able to engage with the gift of music, learn from it, and be knowledgeable about this significant aspect of their lives. Whether or not we are involved in learning and performing music, these courses have been designed to teach all students the foundations, the history, the context, and the human aspect of the music we listen to today. Nothing forms in a vacuum; “Western” history and culture has developed a rich and interesting narrative articulated in and through the music created. As image-bearers of the ultimate Creator God we can learn to become better praise makers, and creative imitators as we grow in this knowledge.

Using lecture, YouTube, and recorded CDs, and being engaged with the music—answering thought-provoking questions, participating in lively discussions—even singing some of the music in class with other students, we will study the six musical periods of Western civilization: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern, examining them with respect to their proper cultural and historical context, defining basic music terms, encountering significant composers and musicians—learning what we like and why we like it!
