Thinking & Computer Programming Skills for Beginners- Offered only 1st semester.

We want our children to be computer-literate and to be able to compete for the high-tech jobs in the 21st century. In our state and in our country as a whole, there are many positions in the job market left unfilled because there are not enough qualified people. But where do we begin? These courses will hopefully be a step in that direction. Furthermore, the ability to think critically equips our children for other areas of life, whether in theology, the social sciences, business, humanities or natural sciences.

This one-semester course aims to create interest and to develop thought patterns for computer programming and computational thinking.  Students will be guided to "drag and drop" command blocks to accomplish computer tasks.  Concepts that will be taught include repeat-loops, conditionals, and basic algorithms. Students will get to see the JavaScript statements that are equivalent to the "blocks' that they used to program their tasks. No previous knowledge or experience with computers is required but some familiarity with the computer keyboard and a mouse is a plus. The student planning to enroll in this class must be able to read and comprehend at least at 3rd grade level.  Parents will not be expected to coach children on any computer-based tasks/assignments at home.  This course will also provide paper and pen activities that will involve identifying and completing sequences, classifications, analogies, and critical thinking skills.

This class is a ONE semester class that meets ONLY on Tuesday.

This course is similar to the one offered for 3rd-4th graders.  But due to the more mature students, the course will move faster and cover more material.  This is geared for students with no prior knowledge or experience in computer languages or programming.  However, they must read and comprehend well at their grade level.  As students show progress and readiness, they will be guided in writing simple computer programming codes.  The course will include exposure to a wider computer vocabulary and programming concepts.  There will also be paper and pen activities to build critical thinking skills.

This class is a ONE semester class that meets ONLY on Tuesday.
